It’s mid August in Florida, and it is raining. August is my least-favorite month. The heat and humidity takes a toll on everything. Sure, September can be just as miserable, but there is hope. October will soon arrive.
For me, gardening in August means never catching up with weeding and pruning. Besides, I would rather be sitting under a ceiling fan with a glass of something that includes ice cubes in my hand.
Anyway, it’s raining. I’m at my desk, the ceiling fan is running on high. I’m looking through some older gardening pictures. What should I do with all these memories?
Yep. Time to start a blog.
Who am I? Born and raised in Central Florida, I come from a long line of gardeners. It’s in my blood, between my toes and deep under my fingernails.
Early on I developed a passion for Gardening With Five Senses. Herbs and fragrant flowers for scent, fruit and vegetables for taste, bird plants for song, butterfly plants for the dance, and all of it woven into an endless tapestry of textures to touch.
I am an opinionated gardener. I believe that it makes more sense to work with nature, rather than fight to subdue it with chemicals. I do not use pesticides or herbicides. I believe that given a little time, planning and study the garden can develop a pretty good balance.
While I received a degree in horticulture over 40 years ago, I have never stopped studying, never stopped learning.
What do I hope to accomplish with the blog?
- Organize and share my garden photos.
- Share my experiences with Florida gardening, sharing what has worked for me.
I doubt many posts will be very detailed. Florida gardeners already have so many wonderful online resources available through the University of Florida. I’ll link to these whenever possible. Their excellent resources include:
- Gardening Solutions
- Florida Gardening Calendar
- Lawn & Garden
- Getting Started With Gardening
- Find County Extension Offices
What’s with the roses? I can always make room for a few roses.
