Yummy Everglade Tomatoes

What is an Everglade Tomato?

An Everglade tomato is a tiny indeterminate tomato that grows on long vines that can range all over the place. The fruit has excellent flavor, but with its thin skin, it can burst as soon as it is plucked. I have found it best to clip the entire cluster, instead of attempting to pick individual fruit. With excellent flavor, Everglade tomatoes are a great choice for salads.

Are They Native to Florida?

Many people call them natives, but I suspect they originated in Central America. It hardly matters because they are certainly well-suited to Florida’s climate. Once established, they are likely to re-seed in places of their own choosing. Well, more than likely wherever they were dropped by birds.

More seed companies and nurseries are beginning to carry the Everglade tomato. Southern Exposure is a good source for seed. They carry several other varieties that are suitable for our climate.
